Belize Audubon Society

Dominique Therese Lizama is the eldest of five daughters and has dedicated her
professional life to environmental conservation. Since joining the Belize Audubon
Society (BAS) in 2005, she has served in various capacities before taking on the
role of Research and Monitoring Programme Director in 2013. In this capacity she
oversees both terrestrial and marine research and monitoring activities. Her key
responsibilities include strategically leading or networking with local and
international partners for the implementation of activities leading to decision
making based on sound science; and ensuring their alignment with national
policies and priorities. Prior to this role, she managed three ecologically important
protected areas in Belize for eight years.

Dominique's passion for the environment was cultivated through childhood jungle
and marine trips with her family. Her academic path was always in the sciences
having an undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Belize and a
MSc. in Natural Resources and Environmental Management from the University of
the West Indies, Barbados.

With 20 years in environmental conservation, she has significant experience at
the senior management level, project management, proposal writing and
facilitating conservation related trainings. She remains committed to conservation
efforts in Belize and is actively involved in various conservation networks for
environmental monitoring, and to a lesser extent, community outreach and
environmental education. Dominique finds enjoyment in both marine and
terrestrial outdoor activities and hopes to inspire more young women to enter
the environmental field.
