Edilberto Romero is one of the Founding Board Member of the Belize National Conservation Foundation. He has played a key role in ensuring the establishment of the PACT Foundation which was later renamed as the Belize Nature Conservation Foundation. Edilberto Romero is currently the Executive Director of Programme for Belize since 2002 and has worked at the organization since 1997. Edilberto has been involved in the Rio Bravo Carbon Sequestration Project since 1999.
Under his leadership, and in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the project’s 1.6 million tons of carbon units were verified, certified and registered under the Voluntary Carbon Standard. Programme for Belize has developed sustainable forest management in the buffer area of the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area which has become a model for conservation and sustainable development. Through his efforts, the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area has become one of the best managed protected areas in Belize and in the region. Mr. Romero has also served as member of various community service projects and organizations, including the Rotary Club of Orange Walk. He founded the Association of Protected Areas Management Organization (APAMO) in 2006 and served as Chair for six years. He has been involved in the US Government-Government of Belize Debt for Nature Swap, since 2001 and has served as Chairman of the TFCA-Debt for Nature Swap Oversight Committee that oversees the implementation of the TFCA-Debt for Nature Swap Agreement.
Mr. Romero has a Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainable Agriculture from the EARTH University, Costa Rica, and a Master’s Degree in Natural Resource and Environmental Economics from the University of Concepcion, Chile.
